Valdres Cabin

Client: Jennifer and Halvor Thorsen Photos: Elisabeth Aarhus

Located in Valdres, the 65-square-meter cabin was designed by and for Jennifer and Halvor Thorsen, who set out to create a cabin inspired by the simplicity and character of the mountain pasture cabin Halvor’s family had rented for decades. While they appreciated the rustic qualities of the old seter, they also wanted a place of their own that combined the same closeness to nature with thoughtful design and carefully considered comforts. The architecture is shaped around the surrounding landscape, with a large window framing the dramatic valley view like a piece of art. Built in solid wood with prefabricated elements from a local supplier, the cabin reflects a deliberate and sustainable approach, combining custom-designed furniture, compact planning, and off-grid solutions such as solar panels and a wood burning stove. The result is a modest yet carefully crafted retreat that balances simplicity, functionality, and a strong connection to its natural surroundings.
